The Oldest Folklore Festival in Slovenia

In June, Črnomelj with its Jurjevanjska draga karstic doline and its old town centre will transform into the folklore capital of Slovenia for the 54th time. Jurjevanje is a member of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts – CIOFF, acclaimed both nationally and internationally. In the five days of the festival you will be able to come in contact with diverse cultures from Europe and other parts of the world. You are welcome to explore Bela krajina and visit Kolpa river, European Destination of Excellence 2010, in order to experience everything that the rich natural and cultural heritage have to offer. The programme will take place at seven different locations and will cater to the youngest, young, and older audiences. You will be able to unleash your creativity at creative and art workshops or participate in recreational sports events. Dance along the folklore groups, there are more than twenty lined up to perform. You will have an opportunity to learn the dances of Bela krajina or any others you set your mind to. “Zeleni Jurij”, the mythological springtime hero known in English as the “Green George”, will come to visit. Savour the gastronomic specialities of Bela krajina and enjoy a selection of high-quality wines.

Jurjevanje in Bela krajina is the oldest folklore festival in Slovenia and a member of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts CIOFF.

The festival celebrates cultural diversity and strives to present a melange of traditional and modern principles, of local and international elements. It has become a tool for pursuing the principles of sustainable and integrated development of Bela krajina, the holder of the European Destination of Excellence 2010 title, and the recipient of the Slovenia Green Destination certificate. In addition Jurjevanje is set to become a “Zero Waste” event.


55th Jurjevanje in Bela krajina will take place between 20 June and 24 June 2018 in Črnomelj.


Throughout its history Jurjevanje has played a vital role in preserving the cultural heritage of Bela krajina, its dances, songs, and music, while inviting other internationally acclaimed folklore groups and other culture creators from across the world to present their own heritage. This model of action allows us to create an intercultural space that is intended to celebrate coexistence and foster mutual respect among nations and cultures. The festival also represents an innovative approach to the revitalisation of Črnomelj’s old town centre.
